Alaska's 40,000 brown bears are divided into two kinds, the smaller grizzlies of the Interior and the enormous brown bears of Southwest Alaska. The size variations are due to the difference in their diet: the Interior grizzlies eat mostly vegetation, whereas the enormous Kodiak bears eat a high-protein fish diet. Brown bears can be distinguished from black bears by their longer claws, wider faces and distinctive shoulder hump. |
