The bald eagle, the symbol of America, is a huge bird of prey with a 6-7 foot wing span. North America is home to 70,000 bald eagles, and about half of them live in Alaska. Bald eagles take five years to mature into their distinctive white head; younger birds have mottled brown plumage but can be recognized by their size, shape, and long flight feathers. Eagles build the largest bird nests in the world, weighing up to 1,000 pounds. A pair of eagles will return to the same tree year after year, making the nest a little bigger each time. It is abandoned only when the tree threatens to give way. |
