Known for their spectacular breaching and unique whale songs, humpback whales are fascinating to watch. Most spend their winters in the balmy waters off the Hawaiian Islands, where females give birth. Come springtime, humpbacks set off on a 3,000 mile swim to their Alaskan feeding grounds. They do not feed year-round, but store up enough fat in the summer to survive the rest of the year. Humpbacks, the most acrobatic of whales, can often be seen heaving their bodies - averaging 50 feet in length and weighing more than 40 tons - out of the water. Often seen when the whale is feeding, this breach behavior is also thought to be a sign of agitation, or of simply having fun.
